Shaping the Grain: An exhibition of South African sculpture carved from wood

The two greatest indigenous South African art forms are ceramic making and wood carving. Both these forms of art production have their roots in utility and tool-making, but developed far from its small beginnings to become one of the most important movements in South African art.

The drive-through exhibition “Shaping the Grain” curated by Gerard de Kamper (Chief Curator of Ceramic and Collections Management at UP) looks at the art tradition of wood carving, which forms such a large and integral part of cultural life.
