After his early work, such as this untitled sculpture made of found objects, Pienaar moved into provocative performance work in the late nineties.
This piece, made of wood and a piece of military canvas, and containing a simple music-box mechanism, is, however, an early and delicate demonstration of Pienaar’s desire to challenge the perceptions of masculinity that he had inherited as a white Afrikaner and to offer the possibility of something new being fashioned from the discarded objects of that culture.
