The Marriage Feast at Cana is a TAPESTRY that typifies the approach and output of many weavers and other arts- and craftspeople at Rorke’s Drift. Specifically African in its idiom, it is also a vibrant retelling of a well-known Biblical story from The Book of John, about a wedding feast in which Jesus turns water into wine.
The combination of Nxumalo’s technical facility as a weaver, the idiomatic expression, and the traditional religious subject matter, make this an important representation of the Centre’s influence on South African art and of Nxumalo’s place in that sphere of influence.
