Nkosi Sikelele

Segogela brings to life a seminal moment in the cultural life of South Africa in this work, by representing a team of soccer players at the moment before they run on to the field to play a match.

The players and officials are holding their hands to their hearts as they sing the national anthem. The work is directly illustrative in its depiction of a recognisable ritual, but its suggestion of pride, both national and individual, and of unity makes it a clearly metaphorical work.
