Venue: Javett-UP, 23 Lynnwood Rd, Pretoria

The Javett Arts Centre at the University of Pretoria will come alive this July with beautiful orchestral sounds by young musicians in celebration of the life of Nelson Mandela. Javett-UP will be hosting the Community Philharmonic Orchestra for an afternoon of music, and entertainment to celebrate Madiba.

In July 2022, the members of the Western Cape orchestra will be travelling to Gauteng to participate in the Madiba celebration concerts to be held at the Soweto Theatre as well as in the City of Tshwane at Javett-UP. This will be the first time that both orchestras share the same stage and we anticipate that it will be a magnificent showcasing and a memorable experience for the orchestra members.

About Community Philharmonic Orchestra

The Community Philharmonic Orchestra offers an opportunity to amateur musicians to play alongside and share a stage with professional musicians. It is envisaged that we have an orchestra consisting of at least 50% amateur musicians at all times during performances. The programme is aimed at mentoring and tutoring at various levels within the orchestra. This will also include life skills orientation.

Other objectives of the programme is to enforce and support the amateur musicians, to create effective role modeling, to create an opportunity to shadow professional conductors resulting in future professional music leaders from these communities.

We will host workshops and music development initiatives within communities to create awareness of opportunities in music and recruit future musicians for the orchestra. In addition opportunities for public presentation, solo presentation and music composition will also be created resulting in holistically prepared musicians.

The Orchestra employs professional conductors and musicians on contract to ensure the best possible outcome for amateur musicians. There will also be quarterly concerts and training opportunities that will enhance the public performance abilities of amateur musicians.
