Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria
(Javett-UP) would like to invite you to our Language Webinar 10 June at 18:00.
Javett-UP currently has an exhibition titled Word Woes curated
by Hélène Smuts, which is a retrospective of works spanning the duration of
Willem Boshoff’s artistic practice. The exhibition title is understood in
English and in Afrikaans. In either language the two words look identical, but
their meanings differ sharply. Boshoff’s concern is often with the context in
which we receive language and the power it yields to exclude or to privilege.
As an artist working with words, Boshoff uses unconventional tactics to
challenge the use of language as an instrument of cultural identity or
exclusion.
The idea of the webinar is to have a conversation around
language. Using the artwork Death of Afrikaans, 2021 by Willem Boshoff to frame
the conversation, art journalist Johan Myburg will moderate the session by
unpacking the death of language in South Africa from a historical and
contemporary perspective.
Moderator: Johan Myburg (Art Journalist)
