MILISUTHANDO Film Screening & Masterclass

Published 21 January 2025 in News from Javett-UP

The Javett-UP, with support from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, invites you to an intimate evening with filmmaker Milisuthando Bongela,  as it will be hosting a screening and masterclass of her critically acclaimed personal essay documentary film MILISUTHANDO on Thursday, 30 January 2025.

Milisuthando Bongela-Davis (b. 1985, South Africa) is an award-winning writer, filmmaker, cultural worker and artist whose career has spanned a variety of creative fields. Her career began in the fashion industry but for the past 16 years, she has delved into music, art, media and film, often turning towards indigenous knowledge systems.

Milisuthando's debut film, MILISUTHANDO, is a deeply intimate portrait of South Africa, blending poetry, film and photography into a striking cinematic essay. Set across the past, present and future of South Africa, the film explores the filmmaker's own youth in the Transkei — an unrecognized Black independent region during apartheid. Through a personal lens, Milisuthando reflects on the love, friendship and belonging experienced in a South Africa still deeply marked by racial divides. Her youth was untouched by the horrors of apartheid until its end and MILISUTHANDO reveals the complex and contradictory forces that shaped her understanding of race, identity and the fall of apartheid.

After watching the film screening, Milisuthando will join a masterclass and Q&A session to offer a behind-the-scenes look into her approach to filmmaking, from concept to production. The conversation will be facilitated by Fezokuhle Mthonti,  who is a Johannesburg cultural worker, researcher and writer.
