Invitation: Remembering Marikana & Reflections on Post-Democratic SA

Published 06 August 2024 in News from Javett-UP

Join us as we reflect on the 12th anniversary of Marikana Massacre through our 2024/25 exhibition We, The Purple, focusing on its themes Landing and Spectres of the Underground on 17 August 2024. This programme will feature an exhibition walkabout which will be followed by a virtual panel discussion with artists Lerato Shadi and Themba Khumalo, moderated by We, The Purple guest curator Khumo Sebambo.

The Marikana Massacre was the killing of 34 mineworkers by police during a wage strike on 16 August 2012 at Lonmin Platinum Mine in Marikana, North-West Province. This devastating event, reminiscent of the Sharpeville Massacre and the Soweto Uprising, remains a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for social justice and human rights in South Africa.

Our programme will begin with a guided walkabout on the Spectres of the Underground theme, exploring the history and impact of mining in South Africa. This segment will highlight how the mining industry has historically shaped land use and ownership, often leading to displacement and marginalization of local communities.

After the walkabout, the panel conversation will delve into how artists interpret land issues in their work, contributing to the Landing part of the exhibition. The discussion will explore themes of land dispossession, restitution, and the complex relationships between land, identity, and power in post-apartheid South Africa.
