The exam season is always daunting, a time when students are stretched to their limits, both mentally and physically. But what if you could approach it differently, with creative strategies to help manage the stress and make learning more engaging? At the Javett-UP, creativity is at the heart of learning. Our Curator for Education and Mediation Puleng Plessie shares five innovative approaches that blend art, mindfulness, and practical tips to help you navigate exams.
Mind Map Art
Use mind maps to creatively organise complex topics. Colour-code branches for each theme and draw icons to represent each concept. This visual mapping helps with memorization and studying into an interactive, artful experience.
Visual Art Note Mapping
Use a pencil to illustrate creative ways of understanding your modules. For each subject or theme, draw symbols, doodles, or icons that represent key concepts. You can also highlight quotes or moments which are important for you to remember.
Post-It Collage Wall
Make a wall of colourful post-it notes for key ideas or formulas. Rearrange them like a puzzle, grouping similar concepts together. It’s visually stimulating and helps you see the big picture, which can be great for last-minute reviewing.
Create a Relaxing Study Zone
If you are focusing on doing more reading than writing, personalise your study space with soft lighting, cosy blankets, and some relaxing scents like lavender or eucalyptus. Having a designated, comfortable area just for reading helps you stay calm and focused, making the exam prep process feel like a calm retreat rather than a grind. Don't forget to use your colourful highlights for important information.
Create a Study Jar of Creative Breaks
Fill a jar with pieces of colour paper listing quick artistic activities like 3-minute breathing, 5-minute sketching or taking walks, 10-minute mini-coloring breaks, 15-minute swimming or relaxing with your pet, or even 30-minute baking. There should be a colour code for each length of time with different activities. Pull one whenever you need a break. These short creative bursts can refresh your mind and help with focus.
As you prepare for your exams, we encourage you to explore these creative strategies and discover what works best for you. Remember, the journey of learning is as important as the destination, and by embracing creativity, you can make your exam preparation a more enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Good luck, and let your creativity shine through!
