Democracy in Masturbation Period remonstrates against the failures of South African democracy. It has a strong reference to GRAFITTI art, and also shows the influence on Ngobeni’s work of artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Dumile Feni and Picasso.

Ngobeni’s view of the failures of post-1994 South Africa is expressed not only in the cynicism of his title but in his powerful use of collage and in his fragmented picture plane.
