Join Javett-UP as we continue the sonic exploration of, and the transdisciplinary nature of Yakhal’Inkomo: The Bongi Dhlomo Collection exhibition. We celebrate International Jazz Day with Dr Nokuthula Mazibuko-Msimang as she presents “The musical life of Dolly Rathebe” as a reading and music intervention. Dr Mazibuko-Msimang is an inaugural fellow of the Artist in Residency Fellowship Programme at the University of Pretoria. This work is based on the focus of her research into the life of local music icon and artist Dolly Rathebe who is widely regarded as Africa’s first black female film star. The manuscript is under development by Mazibuko-Msimang on the life of this South African legend. Her work is intended to articulate and celebrate Dolly Rathebe’s legacy and those of her contemporaries while offering an in-depth reading of the complexities of the lives of such luminaries during the tumultuous period of the 1950s and 1960s in South Africa.
This event is part of the R150 entrance fee to Javett-UP
