What is the artistic legacy of Yakhal’inkomo? This question forms the basis of an engaging and lively discussion between esteemed scholars, artists and critics Prof. Thembinkosi Goniwe and Dr Wally Serote. The metaphor of the bellowing bull brought to life in Winston Mankunku Ngozi’s timeless classic composition Yakhal’inkomo has continued to extend beyond the musical notes used to shape its existence. In the pages of Dr Wally Serote’s 1974 poetry anthology, in various other musical interpretations and responses through creative expression in the visual arts. This talk seeks to explore the intersectionality of the moment of awakening sparked by political injustice and unrest with the cross-disciplinary collaborations of artists in South Africa during the 60s, 70s and 80s.
