The Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) will host a commemorative event on the 16th of December 2021 as part of the National Day of Reconciliation. The event aims to acknowledge and profile the importance of the Mapungubwe Gold Collection, currently on exhibition at the Javett-UP gold tower, as signifier to the regional focuses for social interconnectedness and remediation of our collective, even if contested, histories within a contemporary academic and artistic context. We would like to explore these contestations through a series of calls and responses, thinking of this as a (r)evolution.
‘Mapungubwe: The Reconciliation’ is a form of departure the Javett-UP takes to engage with these notions of the contestations, fictions, and factoid histories. This event will take on the form of a panel discussion consisting of four panellists’ and a moderator, with an introductory ceremonial horn performance by musical artist Azah.
Over the past few years and months that feel like a lifetime of precarious living.
We believe art institutions should not totally close their doors to the public during hard times; but to allow these spaces to house what we would like to call ‘Rituals of Preservation’, inspired by our current Handle With Care exhibition. Spaces which assist us to unwind and engage with other minds.
To respond to our current moment as we navigate the pandemic, ‘Mapungubwe: The Reconciliation’ will be available in both physical and online formats simultaneously.
