The Javett-UP Lounge at Art Joburg presents a window into three current exhibitions.
After a two-year hiatus, FNB Art Joburg is back with its 15th edition from 2-4 September 2022, at the Sandton Convention Centre’s Exhibition Hall 2. The Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) will hold a significant presence in one of the first-of-its-kind Art Joburg institutional lounges. The Javett-UP Lounge, found at D03 in the exhibition venue, will feature a window into three of the Art Centre’s current exhibitions with Yakhal'Inkomo, SCENORAMA and National Treasures: The Mapungubwe Gold Collection.
On Friday, 2 September at 15:00, Javett-UP will present a panel discussion as part of the main talks programme in the AUX Talks Theatre on the Mezzanine at level -1. The discussion titled, "Art collecting as a corrective measure for transformation: Establishing the Bongi Dhlomo Collection”, will be hosted by the Javett-UP's Curator for Education Mediation, Puleng Plessie, with Bongi Dhlomo-Mautloa (artist, collector & activist) and Sipho Mdanda (co-curator of the Yakhal'Inkomo Exhibition & Curator at Freedom Park). The discussion will focus on the curation and process of collecting the Bongi Dhlomo Collection on behalf of the Javett Foundation.
Yakhal' Inkomo is the first curatorial iteration from the Bongi Dhlomo Collection, guest curated by Tumelo Mosaka, working with Sipho Mdanda as Co-Curator and Phumzile Nombuso Twala as Research and Education Coordinator. Collected from 2017 to 2019 by Bongi Dhlomo on behalf of the Javett Foundation, it is a unique and educative assemblage of over 100 classical twentieth-century artworks produced by Black artists in South Africa. Guests at this year’s Art Joburg will be given a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the exhibition through a guided tour by Phumzile Nombuso Twala and Sipho Mdanda, experienced through Virtual Reality. Selected works from the Bongi Dhlomo Collection not currently on exhibition will be on display at the Javett-UP Lounge.
Visitors to the lounge will also get a taste of the unique curatorial experience, SCENORAMA. Curated by Javett-UP Curatorial Director, Gabi Ngcobo, working closely with the Javett-UP curatorial team. SCENORAMA combines the words ‘panorama’ and ‘scene’ in order to present a viewpoint of shared networks of experiences, belief and knowledge systems across different localities in Africa and the Diaspora. The curatorial project features Amanda Mushate, (ZIM) Luana Vitra (BR), Manyaku Mashilo (SA), Nolan Oswald Dennis (SA), Nyakallo Maleke (SA), Oscar Murillo (COL/UK), Paulo Nazareth (BR), Simnikiwe Buhlungu (SA/NL) & Tessa Mars (HAT/NL) in collaboration, Thierry Oussou (BEN/NL) and Zara Julius (SA).
For those who have not yet come to Javett-UP to experience the National Treasures: The Mapungubwe Gold Collection, Art Joburg offers visitors an up close digital perspective of this unique collection of national heritage.

About The Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP)
The Javett-UP is a space that enhances unique and exceptional transdisciplinary learning through the arts. We engage diverse publics in exploring the human condition and reimagining our futures.
The Javett-UP is a partnership between the University of Pretoria and the Javett Foundation. Both share a firm belief in the value of the arts for society in general and education. It’s a project that is collegiate as it is philanthropic. With one foot firmly rooted in academia, and the other embedded in the public, Javett-UP aims to make the art of Africa accessible, relevant and engaging.
Researching African art practices lies at the very heart of the work of the Javett-UP. We aim to set new benchmarks in art curation, conservation and education. The fact that the Javett-UP is part of the University of Pretoria’s research, teaching and learning resource means that this is a place not only for enjoying art but for learning about it, too. At the Javett-UP, learning and enjoying are two sides of the same coin. Both are valued, and both are encouraged.
