YOUTH MONTH: 5 June @ 11:00
The Javett-UP Book Club, is in partnership with the GALA and the UP Centre for Sexualities, Aids and Gender is hosting its first digital event on 5 June 2020.
It will unpack and discuss gender and especially queerness and queer identity, and social commentary in art and elsewhere about LGBTIQ persons and communities.
Joining the two permanent exhibitions at Javett-UP (All in a Day’s Eye and the Gold of Africa collections) is the 101 Collecting Conversations: Signature Works of a Century exhibition of seminal works of the last 100 years by South African artists. This exhibition features a number of works by gay artists. These include Athi-Patra Ruga’s The Knight of the Long Knives; Steven Cohen’s Chandelier; Zanele Muholi’s Simthembile I, East London; and Nicholas Hlobo’s Igqirha Lendlela.
Collectively, these works (and especially in the context of the wider exhibition) address language and the body, tolerance and discomfort, sexuality and transformation, integration and marginalisation, and identity. They give much to talk about, and think of.
