The curatorial team of the
Yakhal’inkomo exhibition at the Javett UP aims to bring largely unknown
narratives to the fore by exploring the encounters of Black photographers in
the 60s, 70s, 80s and early 90s in South Africa.
An inquiry
into the History of Black Photography through the lens of artists and
practitioners during this period. This intergenerational intervention explores
and reflects upon lived experience of these artists, bringing together emerging
and veteran interlocutors. An expansion of visual languages expressed in the
medium of photography conversation seeks to offer a generative collaborative
analysis of the traditions of documentation, how stories were told through
photography during this period and how contemporary practice is shaped by this.
Comment from Phumzile Nombuso Twala “As the Yakhal’inkomo exhibition
curatorial team we are honoured to be able to bring this conversation to this valued
cultural site. As we continue to unearth not only images but experiences of a
brutalised society in the eyes of the Black artists featured in this show, we
aim to extend our curiosity in our quest to understand what it meant to
chronicle Black life during this particular period.
We hope our guests leave with a better
understanding of the legacies of various social documentary photographers in
the South African context, but more importantly, a connection with contemporary
concerns and the distinct power of photography as a way of conveying truth.”
