Creative Writing Workshop - Poetry with Care
Date: 20 February 2022
Time: 10:00 – 14:00
Venue: Ground Floor Gallery
The Javett-UP will be hosting a writing workshop and poetry session as part of Handle with Care, an exhibition of selected works from the South32 collection. Facilitated by Siza Nkosi, author, poet and the director of the House of Siza (an NPO that creates innovative platforms for personal growth and reliance through music and literature). The one-day creative writing workshop will focus on freewriting in response to the Handle with Care exhibition. Nkosi begins the writing workshop process by inviting participants to engage with selected artworks and themes running through the exhibition. These themes unpack concepts of care through the consideration of rituals of self-preservation as a political act, dreaming as an embodied and queer experience, constructions of masculinities from a South African perspective and Abstraction as a way of thinking about complex subjectivities. She will introduce freewriting, using exercises designed to get participants writing without inhibition. As part of their confidence-building, participants will be encouraged to free write in the language(s) they feel most comfortable in. This will be followed by a poetry session where participants will share their writing, and the public will be invited to listen and have a conversation around the produced writings.
