Looking at the repository of the
Mapungubwe archive which consists of a series of images; topographic, aerial
and landscape format. The workshop will introduce participants to designing
their own basic web page using Mapungubwe series images. Participants will be
given the repository to create a basic HTML page into a series of groups. The
pages will be combined as complete websites with credits of the participants.
This is an exciting opportunity for digital art
skills development with an award-winning art collective - an opportunity not to
be missed!

About Buffer Zones
Conceived as a series of chapters,
the essay film Buffer Zones renders the historical site of Mapungubwe as
explored by means of performance, orality and archival history. Through a
transdisciplinary research project Preempt Group investigates the fabric of the
landscape as offering multidirectional signposts of an ecosystem in which human
and non-human species cross paths. This very landscape has witnessed the rise
and fall of an empire revealed by intergenerational stories, the illegal and
colonial settlement under the gold rush and several wars. Using simulation,
orality, holography, and photogrammetry as investigative methods, Buffer Zones
attempts to present an unbroken view of the site. Through speculative tools
such as augmented reality, fiction and fragmented narratives the artists will
facilitate a scenic reading of the complexities of national heritage.
Buffer Zones is made possible as part of the
Visionary Award for lens-based artistic practice through the generous support
from the Tim Heatherington Trust.
About Preempt Group
Preempt Group is a collective of artists working with hybrid and trans-media technologies through performance, film and workshops. More recently, they have collaborated with artist Themba Khumalo on his work Evictions (2020) and produced an essay exhibition on Phumulani Ntuli’s works titled Frequencies of a birthmark (2020). Preempt Group are the inaugural award-winners of the Javett-UP Visionary Award, through the generous support from the Tim Heatherington Trust.
