Thank you letter from the CEO of Javett-UP, Lekgetho Makola

As the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria reaches the end of an exciting first quarter of 2022, I would like to take a moment to thank our guests who joined us for the opening weekend of Yakhal ‘Inkomo: The Bongi Dhlomo Collection. The exhibition opening festivities saw hundreds of people from different walks of life and experiences descend upon the Javett-UP to experience and engage all that Javett-UP has to offer. This moment signals new beginnings for the creative and cultural industries as we begin to emerge from the hardships inflicted by the Covid 19 pandemic, a pandemic that again revealed the effects of the historic traumas suffered by this nation and the region.

Our new 2022 programmes are designed to compel us to find these moments for introspection and reflection towards meaningful engagements to allow spaces for creating new possibilities. The entry-points into our curatorial engagements are myriad as they allow everyone, no matter their life experiences, to interact with content through our education mediation programmes. In addition, students and learners can navigate themes unpacked by the exhibition through direct educational engagements and, different members of the public can enter through familiar historical points that are highlighted in the Yakhal’ Inkomo: The Bongi Dhlomo Collection.

We look forward to creating meaningful engagements with all of you as you make your way to the heart of art at the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria.
