This Heritage Month, The Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) is pleased to announce that it will be offering free entry to the public from 19 to 24 September 2023, during planned interior renovations of some of its facilities. This exciting opportunity allows art enthusiasts, families, and the community at large to continue enjoying some of the galleries during this period of critical maintenance of the Art Centre.
Due to the renovations and maintenance work, visitors will enjoy access to a limited selection of exhibitions and programming during the free entry week, ensuring that the art remains accessible and enjoyable. The exhibitions which will be open for viewing include Another Roadmap African Cluster, Oscar Murillo: Frequencies, Specifications for A Reverse Archeology, and One is But A Shadow of the Other. During the week, installation of the much anticipated Art Bank South Africa Collection exhibition will be in progress and planned to launch on Heritage Day. Everyone is invited to take advantage of this unique opportunity to explore these exhibitions.
Javett-UP is committed to ensuring a healthy and safe experience for visitors, staff, and the broader community when in the premises of the centre. Safety measures and alternative entry points will be clearly marked to guide visitors. However, some areas of the Javett Art Centre will be temporarily inaccessible from 19 to 22 September 2023. These areas include the Bridge Gallery connecting the centre with the University of Pretoria (UP), and the Gold Tower where iconic exhibitions, The National Treasures: The Mapungubwe Gold Collection and The AngloGold Ashanti Barbier-Mueller Gold of Africa Collection are on display. This means that visitors will only be able to view the two exhibitions from Saturday, 23 September.
Please stay connected with Javett-UP through its website and social media channels for updates and any virtual content during this period. “We appreciate your support and understanding in advance. We are excited about the positive changes that will result from this renovation project and look forward to welcoming you to an even more inspiring and accessible art centre when it is completed,” said CEO Lekgetho Makola.
