The Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) is pleased to collaborate with the University of Pretoria Museums (UP Museums), Creative Education South Africa (CESA), and UP Campus Tour (UPCT) on participating in the worldwide festivities of International Museum Day.
The Javett-UP will celebrate this event by providing free entry to all visitors from 14 to 18 May 2024. This project involves a joint effort to increase accessibility of art and museums to the community, while also emphasizing the important role museums play in society.
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) created the International Museum Day which takes place on 18 May each year to highlight the importance of museums in cultural exchange and development worldwide. This year's version will be marked under the theme "Museums for Education and Research," highlighting the importance of museums as active educational establishments that promote learning, exploration, and cultural comprehension.
The Javett-UP Acting CEO, Jackie Rens comments: “Javett-UP is committed to making art and museums accessible to all, believing in their power to shape our identities and deepen our understanding of the world. This global celebration is not just a date on the calendar but serves as a reminder of the role museums play as custodians of our collective history and cultural roots and we are thrilled to participate in International Museum Day with the public and alongside our esteemed partners.”
By being part of the University of Pretoria’s research, teaching and learning resource, locates the Javett-UP as a place not only for enjoying art but for learning about it too. At the Javett-UP, learning and enjoying are two sides of the same coin. Both are valued, and both are encouraged. Through its continuous curatorial programme titled the Living School, the Javett-UP explores ways in which the Art Centre can be a school of collective, transdisciplinary learning.
Museums preserve artifacts, artworks, and stories from different centuries and continents, acting as protectors of our shared heritage. During the free admission week, both new and returning visitors have the chance to explore various cultures, histories, and perspectives through a wide range of exhibitions on display.
Visitors at the Javett-UP can experience the captivating National Treasures: The Mapungubwe Gold Collection, AngloGold Ashanti Barbier-Mueller Gold of Africa Collection, and temporary exhibitions which include the Bongo Dhlomo Sculptural Exhibition. UP Museums is currently showcasing new exhibitions like Unspoken, To Not Forget, and Homage to Pretoria, which are ready for visitors to discover.
