Invitation: THIS LAND Film Screening

Published 26 July 2024 in News from Javett-UP

We are excited to announce the return of First Friday Film Club with the screening of THIS LAND, a powerful 48-minute documentary which tells the story of the small rural village of Makhasaneni, Kwazulu-Natal, as they oppose the development of a mine on their land.

“We have seen that the chiefs are selling land to business people, mining companies, giving land to foreigners to build malls. We know that sometimes our land rights are not properly written in the law. But we know that traditionally we have a land right,” Mbhekiseni Mavuso, Makhasaneni, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa – LAND RIGHTS ACTIVIST.

When the homelands were created by the Apartheid regime, families were relocated on a large scale. Today, many of the same people face a second forced removal as tribal authorities enter into deals with mining companies, without consulting the people who live on the land.

Directed by Miki Redelinghuis, The Land was commissioned by the Land & Accountability Research Centre (LARC) at UCT as a way for rural people to bring the untold story of their struggle for rights and accountability on communal land into urban forums of legislative, political and corporate decision-making. The film is a critical contribution to the ongoing national conversation about land rights and ownership in remote rural areas, and an education and awareness tool for the various issues’ faced by rural citizens.

We invite you to join us on the screening of THIS LAND as follows:
