INVITATION: Noria Mabasa Carving Histories

INVITATION: Noria Mabasa Carving Histories

Noria Mabasa Carving Histories is a conversation centred on Noria Mabasa’s monumental wooden sculpture, Union Buildings (N.D.). This powerful work represents the historic 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where women from various parts of the country marched in unity against the apartheid pass laws for black women. In September 2024, the Javett-UP undertook one of the largest art transportation projects to move the piece from Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History, after being stored away from public view for over a decade. Whilst on view in the current We, The Purple exhibition, the sculpture’s histories are little known.

Join us for a thought-provoking conversation to explore the sculpture's history, narratives, and Mam Noria’s artistic legacy with insights from panelists: Motsane Seabela (Acting Director & Anthropology Curator at the Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History), Steven Sacks (Managing Director of the Cape Town Science Centre) , Puleng Plessie (Curator of Education & Public Programmes at the Javett-UP), and Gillian Fleischmann (Curatorial Assistant at the Javett-UP) who will moderate.
