Holiday Art Programme: Word Woes

As part of the Word Woes exhibition currently on display, the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria is hosting a Holiday Art Programme for young primary and highschool learners interested in plant life. The series of activities will be held on the 9th and 10th of April 2021. 

Holiday Art Programme Day 1: 

Facilitated by Helene Smuts and Puleng Plessie, this full day programme of events  will include participants researching on the origins of naming plants which speak to the shape of different plants. Participants will work with small succulent plants, sculpting their form in clay and drawing them. Activities will Include the creation of a simple crossword puzzle that will centre around names, form and shapes.
The workshop will be interrogating  Willem Boshoff’s exploration of the morphology of plants – how their botanical names reflect their form and origin.

Holiday Art Programme Day 2:
The Javett Art Centre-UP has collaborated with Sci-Bono for a fun and interactive programme which explores art and plants. Learners of all ages are encouraged to book and participate in the days activities
10:00 (9 – 12 years) - Artistic Plants From long ago, creative people have fashioned attractive bead jewellery from all sorts of natural plants. Bring your creative juices and create your own jewellery as we learn about the Job’s tears plant.
11:30 (13 -15 years) - Flower Dissection - Springtime is when Nature appears to come back to life after winter. Trees grow leaves, grass gets green and flowers sprout, but do flowers exist to make plants beautiful? or to attract pollination for reproduction? Find out in this Flower dissection workshop.
13:00 (16 – 21 years) - Why Leaves Change Colour - Have you ever asked yourself why some leaves are green, others yellow and others red especially during autumn? This workshop explores the science behind this beautiful change.
14:30 All Ages -Science Show - Look at the sky, look at the plants, and look at yourself. Science is all around us; from the tiniest subatomic particles in a single atom of oxygen in the air, to the nuclear reactions that formed the immense ball of gas that is our sun and complex chemical interactions. Join us as we unpack these and experience colourful and explosive science!
